“While clothes may not make the woman, they certainly have a strong effect on her self-confidence - which, I believe, does make the woman.”  -- Mary Kay Ashe

ONE
.  Dressing rich on a limited budget and feeling great in whatever you wear, requires planning. Start by concentrating on the classics. Fashions that have been around a long time and include straight pencil skirts, or A-line dresses that you dress up or down are among the classic styles. Other styles include: blazers, white button-down shirts or blouses, pumps and pearls.

Imagine your garment as a decorative extension of your body. Now, create a mix of styles, ideas, and accessories that describe unlimited statements of who you are or wish to become. For example, when wearing your favorite outfit, you create an attractive statement by highlighting your best features. Another statement may be to hide any figure “flaws” at the waist, hips, or bust line with unusual belts, sassy scarves, or eye-catching jewelry.

TWO.  In planning what to wear, always know and choose styles that fit your body type. Are you tall and slender? Petite? Full figure, or busty? Certain designs call attention to certain areas of your body. So, be thoughtful of your fashion choices, and the image you may be sending out to the observer.

Your image may be dramatic, professional, or sophisticated. When you see fashions displayed on a runway model, the effect is more exaggerated. Yet, this picture-view of a garment gives you a key in selecting modern, wearable fashions, and gives you suggestions on how to create your own taste and style.

THREE. Taste is not limited to expensive fabrics or elaborate creations. As such, with each garment you select and purchase, it is up to you to create the finishing touch in a way that reveals what you want others to see about your image.

For a true fashion statement, ask yourself these questions: Are the majority of your garments professional, glamorous, casual, classic, or sporty? Which part of your body do you emphasize or hide the most? What area can the garment be made more appealing with a touch of your own individuality or creativity?

FOUR. The physical concept of fashion then, may be in the continuing change in styles that are accepted and followed by a substantial number of people in modern society. To succeed, these physical changes to fashions must take place many times during a fashion season.

FIVE. What makes fashions effective and unique? When wearing a particular garment, or one of your favorite garments, or accessories, what about the creation of it makes you stand out among others? Is it the shape or the way the garment fits, hangs or falls naturally on your body? Is it the color and texture of the fabric? Or, is it the design of the accessory, or the unique way the garment is constructed?

It is the combination of all these elements that give your fashions their usefulness. Each element lends support in creating the means by which you develop your own individuality. And all of these elements should be used to help you create your complete fashion statement.

When making your fashion statement, remember that whatever fashion you choose to wear, be confident and wear it well! And always consider the effort and cost that go into the physical creation of your garment. Whether you are working with a limited budget, or have excess funds to shop, stay true to yourself.

FASHION FIXES and MORE

“Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself. ―George Bernard Shaw

The way you dress and coordinate certain pieces determines your fashion statement. Be inspired to create fresh new ideas with your individual taste, personality and clothing budget.

When a simple dress can be made to look expensive with your choice of jewelry or accessories, there is no need to spend a small fortune on the latest designer outfit. Learn to know what works with what you already have.

Get ideas from your favorite fashion magazines, fashion websites, your favorite movie celebrities, or popular TV entertainers. Then work those ideas into your own style. Each time you leave your home, whether it’s for a job interview, a dinner date, to a movie theatre, or for a dressy social occasion, what does your outward appearance say about who you are?

Eating nutritious foods, drinking lots of pure water, exercising daily, and getting plenty of restful sleep contributes to a beautiful image. For healthy glowing skin and hair, go for skin and hair products containing more natural ingredients and less added chemicals and toxins. Add more fresh fruits and veggies to your diet. Your body will thank you for it.

Why Think About Your Image?

If you are a business owner, the impression you give to your customers is important. If they like you because of your personality, they are naturally influenced to have a favorable impression about you and what you offer. If they do not like the image you are presenting, then they may or may not buy from you.

Focusing on specific features that your customers see when they visit your physical place of business or even your website, determines the kind of image you display to your customers. How do you advertise your products? What are your prices? Are they comparable with similar businesses?

If you haven’t done so recently, take a good look at yourself. Do you like people? Do you want to serve them? Are you concerned in helping them get value for their money? Customers base their buying needs and impulses on the image your business presents to the public. So, image plays a big part in serving your customers.

If you are a professional, a doctor, lawyer or teacher, in your place of business there may be certain dress codes you are required to follow. Then you must dress in the manner that dictates your occupation. Try to see yourself as others see you. This may make the difference between repeat customers or a business breakdown.

How Are Images Formed?

Your particular style determines your image. Your image is the most powerful possession you may own. Image is defined by your Inner beauty and is more important than just looking good on the outside. Whether your attitude is good, bad, negative or positive, it affects your outward appearance.

Does your personality match your true image? Do you dress more in casual, sporty outfits, or are you a more professional and classic type? Does your image suggest a sassy, high fashion, or a hands-off attitude to others? The way you dress says a great deal about your image, so choose carefully.

First impressions can be persuasive. Are you a talker or a listener? Do you judge or are you open to another’s point of view? Can you advise or suggest your opinions constructively? Adversity and anger in dealing with others is never pleasant. In difficult situations, a calm attitude works better.

What positive impressions are you giving out? Are you creative in coordinating different outfits? What is your individual clothing style? Can you budget wisely; eat healthy, dress well, and maintain a sense of confidence in the midst of the risky economy today? Is your business a pleasant place to visit or shop? If not, now is the perfect time to create a great image!

How Secure Is Your Knowledge of Fashion?

“ Don’t be afraid to dress up. The greatest aspect of showmanship is looking and acting successful.” – - E. G. Leterman

How confident are you with your appearance and the image you have about yourself? Your clothing can add a great deal to the way you express your image. Having a good, basic sense of fashion style increases your confidence. Perhaps, as you shop for new clothing to go to a special occasion, or even as you plan your own daily wardrobe, keep the following tips in mind:

  1. When choosing quiet, more refined colors like gray, navy, and beige, remember to give them a burst of color either in your accessories, a jacket, your handbag, a scarf, or a sweater. For example, a navy suit comes to life with a gold, yellow, or lavender neck scarf.
  2. Purchase clothing in the best quality fabrics you can comfortably afford. They will last longer and give you extended wearing time.
  3. Take an honest look at your figure. Do you have pluses as well as minuses? Accept all of yourself as you are, or take steps to improve. Love the figure you have and don’t dwell on the displeasing parts.

Some examples may include:

  • If your figure is small or petite, wearing layered styles, in light-weight fabrics won‘t pull your body down. Heavy fabrics tend to make your figure disappear.
  • Tops that have long or loose fitting sleeves give you a taller, lengthier look.
  • Color coordinated skirts and tops, and pant suits, or jumpsuits also give you a longer, taller look.
  • If your figure is large or plus-size, consider wearing vertical stripes, small prints, or small geometric patterns that make your figure look smaller and thinner. Stripes also force the eyes upward making the body appear leaner and less full.
  • Try coordinates or outfits in one color, or neutral tones like black, gray or navy blue. These give your body a slimming effect. Jackets with a loose, longer length cover the hips and midsection, and may minimize the fullness in your hips. Pleated skirts, bright colors, and clinging fabrics also emphasize your hips.
  • If you are overly busty, try to find tops with less detail and wider armholes. Choose fabrics without bold patterns. Choose dresses with simple or plain V-necklines. Avoid necklines with bows or elaborate detail, or tops with bold, shocking colors that emphasize your bust line.

Know Your Style

Naturally, different styles and types of fabrics work for different women. If you practice these basic principles, you have an impressive number of ways to create your own fashion image. For instance:

With separates - select jackets, skirts, and tops that can work together or be flexible enough to allow for mixing and matching. They give you a greater amount of individuality and expression. And they give your wardrobe a more up-to-date look.

With Fabrics - for budget-cutting, choose clothing in fabrics that can be worn year-around, like lightweight wools, jerseys, silks, cottons, gabardines, and some knit blends. Some year-around colors include red, navy, green and grey, camel, beige and black. Pastels are usually reserved for summer months - but fashion rules are never set in stone.

Balance and proportion - keep an eye on the way designers emphasize proportion and try to make your top and bottom outfits balance in color, style, pattern or line. Now, different print patterns can be mixed and worn together that can give you an entirely new look. Balance can also be achieved by choosing and matching colors in your accessories to those in your outfit. And by contrasting one burst of color with a quieter or less vibrant color.

Plan Your Fashion Choices

Before going over your wardrobe, determine what your particular lifestyle is. Where do you spend most of your time? At work? At school? Or, at home? What activity do you do most often? How and where do you go to do them?

Go over all of your day-to-day activities, then look at your weekend activities. Which ones are occasional? Then make a concentrated appraisal of the occasions you wished you had something different or more appropriate.

If you have a real problem coordinating your outfits or balancing colors, and your budget allows it, have a session or two with a fashion or color consultant. It just may help answer your fashion questions.

Lastly, several times during the year check your wardrobe with these fashion basics in mind. Not only will you save time and save money by making choices that work for you, your appearance will improve as well. Knowing the fashion basics may also measure the effect it has on your career, your social life, and your professional success. Be creative!

Summary

Knowing your figure, your fashion style, and how to plan your daily wardrobe, is important. Are you confident with your fashion image? Do you know how to coordinate different fabrics and colors to make a fashion statement? Just remembering the basic do’s builds your confidence and your knowledge of fashion.

Fashion Basics

It is not just the role of clothing to tell the truth about the body and the wearer. For example, clothes can emphasize a more favorable part of the body and pass over the unfavorable parts. With some styles like the maxis and the midis, or the bulky tops, you have to hunt for the waist, the hips or the bust line that is actually hidden with the fabrics.

Clothes actually enhance the body with their fantastic shapes, styles, and colors. That is why when you see fashions in catalogs or on a model parading down the runway, it provides a key to your way of choosing what and when to wear certain styles.

How does your clothing determine who you are? Whether you dress to hide a flaw, or to emphasize your beauty, do it with thought and be sure to exercise your own taste.
